Business and STEM fields should apply. For the purpose of this scholarship, STEM includes: biological sciences (no medical/clinical fields), physical sciences (chemistry, physics, astronomy, etc.), math sciences, computer and information sciences, geosciences, engineering, and technology areas associated with the preceding fields.
The scholarship can be used for tuition and fees during your freshman year of college only. It cannot be used for books, housing, living expenses, etc. If you have scholarships that are unrestricted (which can be applied to anything) we will assume those are paying for housing and other expenses when determining your eligibility.
After you receive the award notification and have complied with the Scholarship Agreement in full, a check will be sent directly to your school to be applied to your student account once per semester during your freshman year.
It depends on the number of applicants.
No, we will only contact the ladies advancing to the interview stage. These applicants are usually notified by mid-April at the latest so if you have not heard from us by this point, you were not selected to advance. Additionally, all applicants who interview will be contacted directly with final decisions.
We receive around 100 applications.
You are required to be a female Houston-based high school senior, and must plan to attend your freshman year at a Texas College or University. You must attend a 30-minute in person interview and fulfill the Scholarship Recipient Agreement. You must have everything submitted by the application deadline, which includes your application, transcript, test scores, and resume. If any of these conditions are not met, you will be disqualified.
Yes, in this application, as in life, spelling and grammar count. We notice when applicants have not checked their work and this impacts your overall application score. The essay questions are given out in advance on our Instructions page, so please take the time to reflect on them prior to drafting your complete, well thought out response. Points will be deducted for essays that are too long or short. Please note that our instructions specify that a 500 word response is preferred.
The Scholarship Committee is looking for applicants who can balance good grades with involvement in their school and community, as well as demonstrate leadership in the activities they are involved in. If you volunteered for a day somewhere, you don’t need to write that down – tell us what you are committed to instead. Please keep your resume to 1 page and include the following information:
- Extracurricular school activities - member, officer, or leader in school activity, club or sport.
- Extracurricular non-school activities – member, officer, or leader in professional organizations such as philanthropic groups, religious groups, or community service.
- Indicate an estimate of the number of volunteer/service hours you have provided in any of the above listed organizations.
- Honors, awards, and achievements received during your high school career for school and community service.
- Employment, internships, and summer activities with specific role or job title and relevant dates.
