Our Scholarship Committee has awarded over $1 Million in scholarships to young women pursuing an education at Texas colleges and universities.

Our Scholarship application consists of yes or no questions, short answer, an essay, and several document uploads. Before completing the application, please read below to ensure you are eligible and prepared.

1. Eligibility Checklist

  • A female high-school senior in the Houston area (55 mile radius of downtown Houston.)
  • Must plan to attend a Texas College or University and be enrolled when scholarship funds are awarded.
  • Must be available for an in-person interview in Houston on Saturday, April 25th, 2020
  • Must be a US Citizen or permanent resident of the US.
  • Must not already have a full scholarship or grants for tuition.

2. Application Process

Online application and all supporting documents are due on Friday, March 13th, 2020

A one-page resume, high school transcript, and SAT/ACT scores are required in PDF format

If selected as a finalist, an official copy of your transcript will be required prior to your interview.

3. The Essay

There will be 3 essay questions to choose from. Please keep your response to around 500 words.

Review the essay questions ahead of submitting your application to prepare a well thought out response.

  • What is something you have changed your mind about in the last three years?
  • French novelist Anatole France wrote: “An education isn’t how much you have committed to memory, or even how much you know. It’s being able to differentiate between what you do know and what you don’t.” What don’t you know?
  • Tell us about an idea or experience you’ve encountered that you find intellectually engaging.

4. The Interview Process

If selected as a semi-finalist, you will be notified and must be available to attend an in-person interview, to be held on Saturday, April 25th, 2020. References will also be checked at this stage.

5. Receiving the Scholarship

SPWP will notify finalists of the scholarship awards via phone and email within two days of Interview Day.

The scholarship is contingent upon the following items:

  • Recipients must email their College ID number, Social Security number, and College email address to scholarship@spwp.org within three weeks of award confirmation so that a tuition check can be sent to the recipient’s university.
  • Recipients are expected to attend our July Scholarship Breakfast in their honor and make a short speech (less than 5 minutes) about what receiving the scholarship means to them. If a recipient is out of town for the July meeting, they will be excused but must email their speech prior to the breakfast and attend at least one other SPWP event during the year.
  • Recipients must provide Scholarship Committee an update on their academic progress at the end of the semester after receiving the scholarship as well as a transcript to verify enrollment.
  • Scholarship money will be rescinded if recipient does not adhere to agreement details listed above.
